“Mama Use To Say”
Remember back in the day when Mama use to say
Everybody get up we’re going to church today
So get your lazy butt up out that bed
Come on in here so I can press and comb your head
And you, you go in there and get yourself dressed
Because you’re going to church just like the rest
See back in the day mama didn’t play
Everybody went to church and you stayed all day
You didn’t have a choice when it came to going to church
Mama didn’t care if you we’re sick and tired and your body hurt
Back in the day everybody got up and went to church
Now days children don’t have to come to church they can stay at home
Laying up in the bed acting like they’re grown
Laying there all day pretending that they’re sleep
Waiting on mama to come home and fix them something to eat
“See My mama wasn’t having that, you went to church and that’s a fact!!!”
Remember back in the day Mama use to say,
You bet not go in my kitchen without washing your hands
I don’t know where those nasty hands have been
Aye don’t you sit at my table with that crazy look!
No you can’t fix anything else! You better eat what I cooked
And you better eat everything I put on your plate
Eat it NOW!!! Before its gets too late….
See, back in the day when mama cooked she wasn’t about to fix anything else
She wasn’t gonna do it and you sure wasn’t gonna do it yourself
You didn’t have a choice at what you wanted to eat
You ate what mama cooked and sometimes there wasn’t even any meat
“Beans and rice done us just fine but it seems like we had it all the time”
Remember back in the day when Mama use to say
Stop running around in this house
You better go outside if you wanna play
I don’t know what the heck you think
“But enough is enough and too much of it stinks”
I don’t care who you brought home with you
“You show out if you want too”
What! You call yourself talking back
Boy you gone mess around and get your back cracked
“You better stay in a child’s place”
Before I slap a smile upon your face
Keep standing there with your mouth poked out
“Remember I brought you in this world and I will take you out”
Back in the day parents put fear in their kids
In order to get it through their thick head
I’m the adult and you are the child
I’ve been here forever and you just a little while
I’m the head of this here house
You better listen to what comes out of my mouth
And the day you raise your hands at me
Somebody better start calling Mr. Cooley
Now if you look at some of our household today
Parents are doing what their children say….
“AND THAT’S BACKWARD”
Remember back in the day when Mama use to say
If I have to tell you one more time your BLACK behind is gonna be mines….
Un Un, don’t you dare walk away from me stomping your feet
I don’t care if you are hungry and trying to get something to eat
You better come back here and try it again
Show off if you want to in front of your friends
And go in there and comb your nappy head
Matter of fact take a bath and go to bed
Because I’m tired of dealing with you today
Now get out of my face so I can pray
Just some of the words, “Mama Use to Say”
